Natwest £66 charge for 1 returned DD - is this correct?

Hi all
I've banked with Natwest for a few years now and have never had charges before, however I messed up with a direct debit to Hutchinson 3G which I thought I'd cancelled resulting in it being returned unpaid. The charges advice is as follows:
"The total account charge we will take from account number xxx on 2 October 2009 will be £66. Your arranged borrowing limit is £0
Breakdown of charge:
Maintenance charge for the period 12 August to 11 September 2009
No Item charges this period
Plus a maintenance charge of: £28.00
The amount we will take from account number xxx on 2 October 2009 will be: £28.00
Unpaid Item Fees for the period 12 August 2009 to 11 September 2009
The Unpaid Item Fees accrued on account number xxx are £38.00
Items that have generated these fees:
26 Aug 2009 D/D H3G 14.68 - Charge
The amount we will take from account number xxx on 2 October 2009 will be: £28.00"
This is as clear as mud to me but could anyone tell me if this is correct? £66 for a bounced direct debit for £14.68 seems a bit excessive to me. I've been into the branch and the response I got was basically sorry but tough.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Many thanks,
Chris

Chris, it's £38.00 unpaid item however at some point in between the dates you went into the red and therefore incurred the £28.00 maintenance charge. It isn't for the same event.Hi all

Hi natweststaffmember and thanks for the quick reply.
Yes, on going through my Internet Banking I was overdrawn by £6.50 for a period of 2 days so this will be what the £28 charge is for.
Still think it's a bit unfair, when you're on the minimum wage with a house to run £66 is a lot of money
Once again thanks for the reply.
Kind regards,

Start the process of reclaiming because that is the main thing you can do.Hi natweststaffmember and thanks for the quick reply.

You could just ring them up. Nat West did this to me, charged me for a DD and then, that charge made me overdrawn so they charged me £28. I pointed out that the original DD was because of a delay in processing something, and then the subsequent charge was the cause of the overdraft. thought they would just give me the £28 back but they gave me the £66.
