Problems-SM Camera Card in my computer

The smart media card from my camera wont work in my computer.
Up until yesterday it worked so I took the card to the camera shop to buy a new one because I thought that would correct the problem, but as the cards are no longer available (4MB) he could not help me.
He suggested he tried the card to make sure it was that and not the camera?computer and it worked in the shop. He suggested I take the card home and format it because I have been deleting the photos on the card via the computer and not the camera and he says this is where my problem lies.
All well and good to say that but how do - I do it???
If anybody can give me some advice I would be more than grateful.
