The daughter asked me to accompany her on a drive round the block as her T reg Ford KA (50k on the clock) was making a funny noise.
It's a tap tap tap noise and appears to me to be coming from the region of the nearside front wheel although she reckons that it is also coming from the offside wheel side as well. (My insurance only covers me for my own car so I didn't want to do a Baroness Scotland job and drive it myself to see if she was right because I am not above the law).
It happens when she drives uphill and corners (both ways) and is even louder when braking.
It went through the MOT alright about 100 miles ago last month. I jacked it up this morning and had a look. All 4 rubber gaiters on the end of the driveshafts are not perished and no signs of any grease leaking out anywhere. Is it possible that the driveshaft/s could be u/s even though they're still covered in grease ?
While I had it jacked up, I tried to move the wheel by pulling it at the top and pushing it at the bottom (and vice verse) in order to check the bearings. There was no play on either wheel.
Seeing as how this tapping does not occur when the vehicle is stationary, I figure that it has got to emanate from the transmission chain somewhere, any ideas please before she has to resort to the £50 an hour guys or even worse, the scrappage scheme ?

get her to take it to a large enough area where she can drive the car on full lock in both directions,if it clicks then, then it is prob CV joint,
they also make a strange noise that seems to come from the end of the gearbox that we are trying to completely sort outI

When you say, "a strange noise that seems to come from the end of the gearbox that we are trying to completely sort out", do you mean we as in a KA owner/driver or we as in Ford Research & Development U.K. Dealers keep the punters off our backs team ? :rotfl:0

love it, but no, I got my mechanic to look at a friends car making the 'strange' noise and he wasnt sure, and then his boss had a look but could not really determine the noise,we dont want to say its one thing then find out its another involving them in unneeded cost, all we know is it is coming from somewhere near/in the gearboxI

Top mounts and wishbones are common on Ka's - could it be either of those?Genie

Or the nut cover has come off and is rattling around behind the wheel trim...?0
