Is claiming tax and child credits upping any one elses rent aswell.
My partner works 21 hours a week and I'm self employed doing 16 hours.
At the moment work is quiet for me. I made a query to see if we could get help with more housing/Tax benefit. The answer was no as we were getting tax credits. I then made a query asking if I wasn't getting any tax credits what would the situation be. The reply was that the tax credits were causing the rent and council tax bill.
Don't get me wrong it does help out, but it seems to be you will receive in one hand and have it taken away in another.
I thought the whole idea was that you claim these benefits to help you.

I don't know if it'll make much difference but if work is quiet and you think it's going to be like that for a while why not infrom tax credits in your change in circumstance?
It may make a difference in what you are recieving now which in turn may reduce your rent and council tax billFuture Mrs Gerard Butler

Hi
Informed them this morning. Just need to wait for paper work to come through now.
I even queried with the council this morning if my partners hours dropped to 16 what would the difference be, answer £3.45 deduction. Even if I come off tax credits they simply transfer it to my partner to claim.0 -
Instead of dropping his hours have you queried what HB you may be entitled to if he upped his hours to full time and you kept yours at 16?Future Mrs Gerard Butler

I need to wait at the moment to see what reductions if any are in the pipe line, I've paper work going back and fore in the post. I will make enquiries when all paper work is received.
I now understand why some people stay on unemployment benefit.
Many thanks.0 -
are you currently receiving working tax credits as this, and any childcare costs, will cease if you are no longer working 16 hours - you may find you are no better, or even worse off0

I queried this morning about this. It would be transferred to my partner to claim the credits in her name. We would lose a 30 hour element if I stopped. The only good news at the moment is I have just secured a job interview on Saturday only 8 hours but any thing will do to help.0 -
