Mobile instead of Landline

IN order to keep our costs down, my wife and I have a mobile phone each for calls, both incoming and outgoing. I've just been given a mobile by work, so mine (PAYG) is a spare, and tends to be used as a "home" phone.
What I'd like to know is whether there is a landline phone that will use a SIM card instead, as the handset I use at present is a bit small to use as a "normal" phone, and the ring tone is too quiet to hear if you're in a different room in the house, etc.
I have seen some DECT phones have a SIM reader, but it seems only to be used for transferring contact details.

I'm not really sure exactly what you're asking here but a BT Relate 2100 has a SIM card reader.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

A 'gsm gateway' may be of use. You place the sim in the gateway and connect a normal landline phone.0 -

Thanks, that looks exactly what I am looking for.0 -

yes, its similar to a lot of DECT phones I have seen which have a SIM card reader built in. They are used to transfer/store contact details rather than for making calls.0
