Artex - would you buy a property with it?

Hi everyone.
Does Artex affect the price of a property?
We've just moved into a bungalow built in 1985. The lounge, hallway and two bedrooms have Artex walls and we're deciding whether or not to get them skimmed. The ceilings throughout are Artex-ed and we're leaving those well alone as we know it would cost far too much money to get those skimmed and they are 'normal' nowadays.
We cannot remove the Artex because it's been put straight on to plasterboard. We're also asking for estimates from local plasterers but before we go ahead with anything we would like to some general consensus of opinion as to whether we should leave it or skim it over.
Thanks for reading this!

You have to live with it!! - If you like it leave it, if you don't then get it sanded smooth ( watch the dust, I think 1985 is probably post asbestos in artex but it might be worth getting it tested) or skimmed.
It wouldn't stop me buying a house that I liked but I would probably want to get rid of the textured finish.0 -
Personally I cant stand the stuff. I would say it depends, if your looking to do your house up to a good standard to re-sell I would get rid of it, if your just going to enjoy living in your house and can deal with it, then leave it.
We had our artexed celings covered up, i cant rember excatly how much it cost, £300 i think including plastering boarding for two rooms and the hallway and stairs. Well worth it in my opinion.Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.0 -
Agree if you like it paint it the colour you want and don't worry about it.
If you are getting the walls skimmed then getting the ceilings done at the same time probably won't cost that much more and if you can get it done before your furniture goes in is the best time.
As to does it affect the price of the property you have only just bought it so you should know the best, did you get it cheaper because of the decor or where there other people interested in the bungalow too?0 -
For me it would definitely affect the price, I would knock off the cost of having every trace of the flaming stuff eradicated from any offer I made for a house.0

I'd get shut of it, not because of it affecting the price of the house but because I hate the look of it (dust trap) and it's a beggar to paint. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Personally I can't stand the stuff but its your house and up to you what you want to live with. Tastefull ceilings are one thing - on the walls is another.
Depending on how deep the Artexing is, you might want to go over it with something like a Surform to take the biggest peaks off and mean that you need a thinner skim. Interestingly some forms of it will steam off to some extent if you have a wallpaper steamer - it softens into a sort of rubbery substance that you can peel off. We got it off a bathroom ceiling in our old house like that.Adventure before Dementia!0 -
My house is covered in it, seriously, not one bit of wall is free of the stuff.
I found out not long ago, that a young lad that lived there a few years ago was training and used the house to practice:eek:
I hate it hate it hate it, i need to get a plasterer in for a quote to get rid of it, but as i am renting the house i am reluctant to do it.
But in answer to your question, it wouldn't put me off buying a house if i really like the place, but i might want to knock a few hundred off to cover the cost of re-plastering, but all depends on how much i got the house for in the first place IYKWIM.0 -
I'm not sure how much time you lot spend looking at the ceilings, but quotes for skimming will let you know how much it'll cost to cover up.
I'd leave it .. That's the money saving tip anyway... And disown any friends who judge you for having an artex ceiling.0 -
we have it on every ceiling in our home - it does bother me - however didnt bother me that much not to move in... as we go through each room properly - we will get the ceiling skimmed to hide it... our first room to go (today actually!) is the bathroom - cant wait lol0

I'd get rid! Wouldn't want to live with it.0
