My son was using my computer last night and something very strange happened. Suddenly a pop up from windows security suggested the computer is ionfected. Most of the files and folders are infected with viruses and trojans. There were so many that I started to panic and it did not seem right. It gave me the option to remove all and when I click yes. I got a link to update a software which I did not do and just close the programme. Kaspersky 2010 did not report anything unusual and this is baffling me? Should I be concerned? Thanks

Should I be concerned?
Yes - the popups are being generated by a form of malware known as "scareware", and it is generating bogus reports to persuade you to buy a "fix" that you don't need.
You can take one of two routes - either use the generic malware removal guide in the stickies at the top of this section, or give us some more info on what the scareware program calls itself - we should then be able to point out a (probably less long-winded) fix for it.0 -
grab mbam from http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and run that (but update it first)0

You might be lucky with this oneI got a link to update a software which I did not do and just close the programme.
Scan with some malware programs like malwarebytes, superantipsyware and a-squared to make sure.
Also some online AV scans - ESET (NOD32 People) & panda
