Broken Elec Box Door

Came home last night to find the door of our electricity box (on outside wall) broken ... well the lock bit.
I assume someone came to read our meter and couldn't open it (requires long key) so broke the lock instead.
We've been in the house a couple of months and recently changed supplier. I called our current supplier and they said it def wasn't them who came out to check it.
About to call old supplier but seems weird they would check it.
How would I go about finding out who it was and getting them to pay for a new door/lock?
Thanks all

Maybe old supplier has failed to tell the meter reader there has been a change of supplier. Also could it be your gas supplier looking for the gas meter rather than the electricity meter?IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

That is more likely. Our house is an ex housing association house so we always get ppl coming round to cut the lawn, the hedges, service the boiler etc because somewhere along the line it's not been noted it's a private property anymore.
Our gas and electricity are now with the same supplier so I don't think it's them. More likely the old one. Will call and find out. Wonder how likely I am to get them to pay for a new door?! Not very I imagine ...0 -
I'd start by writing to both the old and the new companies to see which one instructed a meter reading. Then find out who they contracted the service to, and put in a written complaint.
The problem is these meter boxes belong to you. They're not the property of the supplier, so if one gets damaged you have to foot the cost. I would say it is a fair guess everyone will denounce responsibility, or if someone does own up to say it was their meter company, they will say it was like that when the meter was read. In other words - prove it.
Depending where you go and the exact model of meter box, you're looking between £20-£40 for a replacement door plus postage.0 -
With electric meter boxes, some distributors will replace/repair free of charge, bare in mind your distributor is not your supplier. Gas meter boxes are a different story, although national grid will send out a free replacement bolt and hinges.0

Hi,
shouldn't cost much to repair, keek, and as you're not really sure it was electric/gas reader, may be the quickest option.0
