    Does sound suspicious....

Good that it was by special delivery and not recorded with extra insurance.

I think Royal Mail may dig their heels in with this as you can see how easy it would be for the receiver to say it never turned up when they just want the ring and their money really. Especially as you would have to mention that it is an ebay auction, that will instantly raise alarm bells.

I would say last thing you want to do is claim from royal mail. You need to call the buyers bluff but very carefully so that it doesn't look like you are accusing them and get their back up.... mentioning the cops was a good move... wait and see what they come back with to that...

There are some scammers but not lots. It's just that reading forums like this you hear about all of the problems. Meanwhile millions of transactions are going through fine.

You will only ever hear about the bad stories on ebay.

I'm sure this forum would be a very boring, but incredibly busy place if everyone started a thread about every smooth sale or purchase that they had.

Its the same as crime. you only ever hear about the murders robberies, bad drivers etc. Crimewatch would be very dull if it had stories about Mr Jones driving the M40 and not breaking any traffic laws

Nothing is ever black or white. The proof of what has happened here will be recorded in the weight on the package label. If the seller has the packaging and it weighs less when delivered the ring was removed in transit. If it was the same weight without the ring it was never in the box to begin with. In the latter scenario it was maybe 'innocently' mislaid during packing.
