Depends on type, boiled, mashed etc. size and what else is on the plate.
A big bowl of small new potatoes to accompany a baked Camembert and you can easily get through half a dozen.
Mashed - half a tennis ball size.
Boiled - 3
Baked - 1 (or 2 little ones)0 -

Will it not depend on who you are cooking for and individual appetites? For instance my elder son (15) will eat six medium sized potatoes without a thought. Younger son (9) will eat two at most.

agree with pinkwinged...a few potato lovers in this family that would gobble them up if we had loads!
if you find you have extra keep for next day...mash could become a pancake/fritter by mixing in some beaten egg seasoning, warm up a frying pan with some oil and place spoonfuls in and gently fry them.
boiled potatoes - fried potatoes, topping for a pie, potato salad are a few ideas.0 -
Agree with Debtmuncher -leftover potatoes are always worth having around. It's even a good idea to deliberately cook more than you need;)0

Do you know, I'm 45 years old and have never once ended up with a leftover roast potato... That could explain why I'm considerably larger than I should be :rotfl:I'm always looking at ways of using up leftover roasties but no matter how many I cook, they always disappear.... usually into my mouth...0

Per adult, mashed potato should be 2 tablespoons for a portion, or two ice cream scoops. For a child, it would be half that.
So then you just have to decide how many portions you want to eat

....just remember potatoes do not count towards your five-a-day so, contrary to other people here, I would cook less than necessary and make up for it by filling the plate with actual vegetables. Just my two pence
