  • I always thought portions of potatoes should be roughly the same size of the palm of hand thats eating it, so OH would have more than me, and the kids would have much less than both, IYSWIM;)

Per adult, mashed potato should be 2 tablespoons for a portion, or two ice cream scoops. For a child, it would be half that.

So then you just have to decide how many portions you want to eat :)

My DS would starve on so little.

    Mine too.

Personally I loathe being told how much of something I should be eating.

A portion depends many things: whether you are my 101 year old gran or my 14 year old son, whether you have just swum 40 lengths or have sat in front of the PC all afternoon, whether you are a marine commando or a librarian, whether your meal is one of stuffed jacket potatoes or meat and two veg, whether you are serving pudding as well, whether you are serving bread with the meal, and on the size of your spuds:)

If you really want to know exactly how much the busy body govt think we should eat then this site has a handy portion calculator;)
  • I wondered if there was an uncooked weight? We just never seen to get it right and either end up with way too many or not enough! We normally mash if that helps.

Potatoes are home grown so sizes are very random.
  • i actually go by a pans worth for mash so for us a medium pan (out of a three pan set) is enough for us (family of 6). roast potatoes is 3 per person...we all love them lol.

but for stovies its actually a large pan because its larger helpings. same again if you were serving mince potatoes...that would be a large helping.

well actually the five year old twins are two roast potatoes!

boiled potatoes is four each for three of us and one or two for the other three but more avail if wanting it.
