Overlapping Wallpaper - smoothing it out?

Hi. I'm currently tasked with repainting the interior of our house and in the living room the walls have what I assume to be wallpaper lining paper hung (badly) and painted over a few times.

Some of the strips of wallpaper are not hung very well and overlap - in places up to about 1.5cm worth of overlap, leaving a visible vertical line/bump in the wall.

Is there a straightforward way of removing this. Is it something that can be done with just sanding, or should I be looking to do something more elaborate.

I've got a load of matt emulsion to pain over it all afterwards, but would love to prep the walls as best as possible before painting.

Any help/suggestions would be most appreciated.

  • If the overlap can be seperated from the bottom layer then I would score down the hidden edge of the paper and then lift out the strip of overlap.

A damp cloth might help loosen the overlap in the same way you would strip the paper from the wall.

If it was upstairs in a bedroom , might try some repair work.
But in the living room, cut your losses , strip off and re - paper.
