We have been trying to use local farm shops for our shopping, I was amazed to find out that the tastes and flavours I remember as a child didn't die out because my tastebuds had rotted away; it was because we were eating crappy supermarket fruit veg and meat which was so bland all semblance of taste had been frozen, chilled or packaged away!

They pay their staff more than a lot of places, I think their general staff have a starting wage of around £5.20, which I'm sure is more than most other supermarkets and local businesses.

The minimum wage is lower than that if you're under a certain age.

My local Lidl, here in Norfolk, pay £7.50 an hour, but you have to do any job and do relief at other stores, so also you have to be able to drive.
It's quite a small town, yet we have Sainsbury,Tesco and Somerfield as well as Lidl. It speaks for itself.
Lidl is also where OAP's are queuing up for store opening on bargain days.
I would guess that the goods are being sourced from cheap countries like China, where wages are low anyway.
Have heard they operate on a 2% margin, so they can't be accused of profiteering, and many other stores operate a 'no cash on your person' staff policy.

The Nat Min Wage is £4.25 for 18-22 year olds and £5.05 for everyone else.

I compared the Sainsbury's Basics cheese with the standard stuff and the nutritional information was identical. I therefore concluded that it's just the packaging that's different.
The taste probably is as well! That won't show up on the nutrition listings; the longer cheese is matured, the better it tastes, but the more it costs because of the investment and the storage facilities.

the thing with lidl/aldi is that they dont give you 10 types of jam, 8 types of tea, they give you 2 types of tea, 2 kinds of jam, by doing this it saves money for the company
