If you do spill coffee get some baby wipes on it and it will clear it up so you won't have to worry about it.

Yes but baby wipes won't mend a broken granite work surface :D

  • I would buy some rugs and put rugs down - ikea have cheapish ones and put runners in the hallway etc. We had a beige rug, so on leaving our rented property had to spot remove stains, and potentially use a carpet cleaner, but these can be hired cheaply.

We also never wore shoes in the flat so that we didnt tread mud on the carpet. Regarding spillages etc, just buy something that you can use quickly on affected areas, and hopefully you should be ok.
  • Points to poppysocks for the correct answer.
  • Meant to add, if you have beige carpets dont put dark rugs on as sometimes dye can slightly mark the carpet (happened to a friend in her rented flat), so I would put light rugs on light carpets, which works fine too.

We also ensure that drinks are kept out of reach so that dont get spilled, and fortunately i am a white wine drinker as opposed to red so not such an issue there!

Thanks poppysocks. I am a lot more careful about spilling my wine than my coffee :o

It all feels a bit scary as we are relatively normal but my OH is very heavy footed (put his foot through the loft recently in our own house). Already while packing he has banged his knee so badly on an old washing machine it swelled up to the size of an apple, he's bruised his thumb, he has dropped a vase that my best friends bought me for my birthday, and for some reason if he talks while drinking coffee he spills it everywhere (its as though his mind doesn't focus on more than one thing at a time). He said he would carry the piano into the house on his own ..... maybe it would be cheaper to get a new bloke lol :rotfl:

It depends how bad the stain is really and the location.

I have just moved into a rented property and the lighter coloured carpets do look grubby but there are no huge stains that stand out. The condition of all carpets was noted in the inventory.

There are plenty of products you can buy to treat minor stains with but if it was a bad stain on an expensive carpet it might pay to get a professional rather than risk making it worse.

red wine - dash to the kitchen and get Salt - pour it in copious amounts over the red wine and mop up (dont rub) as soon as all the salt has turned red - repeat till all liquid has been absorbed - wait till utterly dry then hoover up salt remnants

alternatively keep Salt next to sofa !!!!!

You'd have to work quite hard at breaking granite, leave pan stands on the worktops at all times and use gentle cleaning products just to be on the safe side.

With the coffee, must you drink coffee at all in the rooms with pale carpets? As kids we were never allowed to eat anywhere outside the kitchen/ diner, no drinks upstairs and shoes off by the front door - we had cream carpets that remained immaculate with a professional clean every few years.

I am insured with Endsleigh and they have a Tenant Contents Insurance that has an additional "Landlord's Stuff" extra you can buy. http://www.endsleigh.co.uk/rented-property-insurance.html
I can't find mention of the landlord contents cover on there, but I know it exists because I chose that and another extra (for getting locksmiths/glaziers out immediately if you've had a break in, rather than trying to contact a landlord at 3am to fix it)
