Can't Install Office 2003 Service Pack 3

Options
I've been trying to install service pack 3 for Microsoft Office 2003 onto my laptop and no matter how many times I try I get the same message that the update can't be installed.

What to do?

I've tried to delete the update but it just keeps downloading itself. I've also downloaded the update from the Microsoft site and tried to install it manually but it keeps asking me for the source disk and well I just can't lay my hands on it.

Quite a few years back I also had an education copy of Office 97 and the machine came pre-loaded with Works, I'm wondering, therefore, if there may be a clash here, but I can't see how!. (As a by-the-way if I delete Office 97/Works will I loose any information there or will it be automatically saved in Office 2003?)

I basically only use Word 2003 so I'm not especially worried if I don't get the download, I've lived without it up to now but I'd like to get rid of the update or install it properly.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks

  • Is this a genuine copy of office 2003? If not, it will be failing the genuine validation.

I think the answer is yes.

My nephew works in the computer programming business and his firm receives beta copies of Microsoft releases from Microsoft and it was one of those copies that was placed on the computer. So yes I guess it is legitimate.

Why not contact him - well he is on holidays in Canada at the moment; any suggestions?

If it was a beta copy then it is unlikely that the update will work.

Originals of the OEM or retail versions will be the ones that update - the beta releases predate these and are intended as pre-production runs to iron out final bugs before the full versions go on sale.

At a guess, I'd say this is correct. The installer for the Service Pack is more than likely limited to exclude anything that comes before what version the final release of the software was.
