My dad is seeking a divorce after 4 or 5 years marriage. Remainding content removed - can't find a "delete post" option yet

If they're married, then all assets and liabilities are joint regardless of whose name they are in.
I'd suggest to your father that he gets some legal advice, most solicitors offer a free half hour appointment.0 -
Claireac is not strictly correct. If her debt was in existence before they met, or has not been accumulated getting things for the benefit of both of them ie household goods etc, then he should have no liability.
By the sounds of things he is, or will be on retirement, able to move on financially after divorce.
This is where claireac is correct, all assets are up for division. His wife may be prepared to accept his offer to walk away, or if your father has considerable assets and pension provision she may want more. I agree with claireac legel advice is essential.0
