OH does plastering for a living and he uses cheap emulsion with water added, then top coat of normal paint. A lot cheaper than paint for new plaster.

Mcpherson used to do a specific paint for new plaster, many colours. Allowed the plaster to dry out gradually over a year or so whilst looking nice then you just paint normally. Used it in my new conservatory and extension. Worked perfectly and the colour lasted for two years before I redecorated anyway.

  • Keldin, Hi,

You really should not seal new plaster. For the 1st 6-12 months you need to use a water based emulsion so that the new plaster can dry out properly. It is surprising how long that can take. It may look OK when the 'skim' has dried, but the plaster base coat can take quite some time.

Cheapest white emulsion from a builders merchants and water it down loads for the first coat on bare plaster - we did the whole house when we built it - they do small to huge lots of emulsion and it must be matt.
Saving in my terramundi pot £2, £1 and 50p just for me! :j
  • I'm in the process of stripping wallpaper from old plaster, then I'm going to slap on some cheap white emulsion. Am I ok to do this? Is it worth treating any areas I've used filler on any differently?

    Thanks.

Just add a bit of water to a small kettle of paint first to water the emulsion down then do a mistcoat apart from that all should be ok.
