Maybe of interest to some,my BIL is on LHA and just found out that for the 1st 13 weeks following his claim(after redundancy)he received 50% extra LHA,when he queeried this was told that its quite new,and its to help people while they maybe find cheaper accomadation.
Can anyone confirm this,or has he some how got it wrong?
btw I would appologise to anyone who last week thought I was having ago,i was having a bad few days(worse than usual)and should have stayed well away from my keyboard.:lipsrseal

It's not new but it is correct. Basically if your BIL (or their partner) hasn't claimed Housing Benefit in the last 52 weeks and they could afford their rent prior to losing their job the Housing Benefit is protected. This means that the Benefit will be assessed on a higher rate than the LHA rate for the first 13 weeks of them claim.
Hope that helps.0 -
I have never heard of this perhaps it is a local scheme! I know they are stopping paying the extra £15 per week of LHA that claimants could keep.
I am glad you're feeling better0 -

There has been a backbench revolt on the £15 extra LHA and I think they are keeping it now.

I know you do not mind being corrected unlike the odd other person (no names as I do not want my post reported to abuse by a sneak and deleted).
On the other hand I could be talking rubbish as I found this:

Umm interesting - will have to see what happens with that one in April, they seemed pretty keen on scrapping it earlier in the year when the budget came out. See how much power these back benchers have !!!
It is not a local scheme its a standard protection, basically ( as already stated) we will pay the actual rent ( subject to means test ) for 13 weeks before restricting to the applicable LHA ( if they meet tha criteria already stated).Just repeating really !

And just to add to that, not only is it not just local, it's not even new.
It was part of the HB scheme when Rent Officer decisions were used. 13 weeks full rent should always have been allowed, subject to the relevant conditions.0 -

Scrapping things always involves more than it seems.
Introduction of £15 LHA cap had a transition period of over a year with numerous warnings to the claimants affected.
Frank Field has already said there's no chance it willl go through.
The government won't admit u-turns, so it will just get forgotten/buried in all the other mess.0 -

I hope they don't get rid of it as I need it for rent not other bills. My stupid council pay weekly so on a 4 week month I pay £5 on top of the LHA if they stop the £15 I'd be paying £65 which isn't good when on JSA.
Thankfully I'll be working by the time it comes into affect if it does.
I know a local council work LHA out monthly which is so much better.0
