He says he assumed his monthly payments were purely for his loan and never knew this was optional.

I think he has a case here, but would welcome feedback from anyone else who has dealt with Bank of scotland.

Hi, it certainly sounds like you have a case if you did not know anything about this being added.
If you take a look through the reclaiming guide here

It gives lots of reasons for misselling and also template letters. If you decide you were missold then you can write to whoever sold the insurance to you (Bank of scotland) and state your reasons (maybe better to use the template as a guide and do your own letter from it) and then you give the company 8 weeks for a full and final response. Always send by recorded delivery and keep a copy if possible and if they do not uphold in your favour you are then free to take the complaint to the FOS.
