How much was your last taxi/private hire journey and what distance was it?
Was it between 6am and 12pm or between 12pm and 6am.

  • why?

well i'll tell you anyway.it was a private hire company from airdrie called penny cabs, i called them and booked a taxi, it cost £18 from glasgow city centre to motherwell.it was around 1am,which is about 15 to 20 miles journey.
i always use them they are always well priced and every driver is pleasant, usually have good laugh on the way home with them.and they are usually good drivers.

the local company i use are crap, they are redline in motherwell, most drivers dont talk, thier cars arent the cleanest inside and it can cost about £6 to go 2 or 3 miles.and half of them havent a clue where i want to go, its not as if im asking them to go to new housing estates, its usually my street which has been there for the best part of 80 years and isnt off the beaten track.

  • Just trying to get an idea on what firms charge per mile. Curiosity so to speak.

For 8 miles around here after midnight your around £22 if it's on the meter.

With that site you can pick your local council, where you are going to and from. and the time of day.
I don't know how accurate it is 'cos all the private hire companies can charge what ever they like, it's only the black cabs that the council tell what they must charge.

i tried to get a taxi from lanark a few years ago back to motherwell, there werent many willing to take us,well thats when we eventually found one! it was a friday night and we ended up paying £25 i think. i like lanark but expensive taxis like this do little in way of attracting me.so if im heading to lanark i'll just drive.

  • I think thats where the problem lies at the weekend. They'd rather do small locals than take you any distance. So they give you a high price and if you accept it great if not they dont care anyway.

I use to drive a hackney on the outskirts of Liverpool, you're not allowed to pick up outside your area. On a Fri/Sat night if someone got in wanting to go into town, about a half hour journey £7-8, itwas a good fare at 10pm, you could be back for the pubs closing, but the same fare at 11.15pm was a sickener. At chucking out time you may be able to do a dozen £2 fares, each time you dropped off you were still in your patch and may get another either off the cobbles or the radio.
It was similar of a morning, the last thing you want in the rush hour was a fare into Liverpool when you could do a few quick school runs, come 9am everbody was wanting the longer runs.
