Welcome to MSE Dave!
Do you have a credit card bill that shows when you bought the tv? Without any proof of purchase, you are going to really struggle.
If you can find some proof of purchase, you are entitled to a proportionate refund, a repair or a replacement at the discretion of the retailer.Gone ... or have I?0 -
hi dmg thx for replying, yeah i think i can look back on my credit card statements for the purchase,so if i can find it i could get a refung or what not0

It would be up to the retailer as to what they will offer. If they do offer a refund it will be proportionate. AFAIK Argos usually offer a repair in the first instance.Gone ... or have I?0

ok i shall see what they have to say or offer, thx for the advice

I'd ring Customer Services first (0845 640 3030), to check before you take lunge it down to a store.
Legally, Argos can ask you to get an independant report done on your TV by an accreditted engineer to confirm that the fault is inherent to the TV, and not misuse, neglect etc. (see Sale of Goods Act, reversal of burden of proof).
If your report confirms that the fault is inherent, then Argos should arrange for a repair free of charge, you are not likely to get a refund at this point.[DISCLAIMER: Any posts made by myself are my opinions and do not represent my employer]

Thanks for your post. I have a similar but worrying problem. My telly is broken (£500 Panasonic) and I took it to Argos. I bought it in January. I was told by the bloke that they have to send it for repiars and if the Company come back to say it is my fault, I will have to pay. Surely this cannot be an independent assessment. I mentioned that and he insisted that 'they are experts and they know' and it is company policy. He did not offer me the option of an independent assessment.
I was very surprised, because Argos is usually quite fair.
I was made to sign that if the repairers say it is not due to a 'manufacturing defect' I will have to accept liability for any charges. He claimed that this is the standard procedure.
Can you please advice me on how best to proceed.

Thanks.
That is common procedure for most companies.
They are basically saying if it is down to you misusing the unit you will be charged for any costs incurred. Which seems fair.
If the report did claim misuse, you could then pay for an independent report and claim back those costs if they say differently, and force Arggos to repair.0 -
You could always get your own report done Argos can not stop you doing such, but may still insist on sending off to repair with there manufacturer.0
