It will most definitely work if your car usually runs on diesel. A friend of mine at work used to run his diesel van on Vegetable oil and never once used proper fuel, I remember him telling me that it works providing your vehicle is a diesel.

  • i was having this conversation with a garage owner near to were i work and he runs his 4x4 off it and so does a friend of mine both of which use diesel, the garage owner said i could do it with most diesels. :)

Be very careful. Vegetable oil and biodiesel are completely different things.
Yes, most if not all diesels will run on GOOD QUALITY biodiesel, but if you found a supplier you would really have to test it yourself before putting it in your car (quality could vary batch by batch).

Some older cars will run on new vegetable oil or a mix of oil and diesel (or even a bit of petrol).
These will also run on used veg oil thats been filtered very well and had any water removed.
Theres still some older ones you'll kill if you try it.
It's a minefield and shouldnt be undertaken without a lot of research.
  • I have just bought a 1997 Vauxhall Astra td. Its very clean and tidy and has been well looked after, although the turbo is not working so is a bit sluggish at slow speed.
I can get my hands on an unlimited supply of Wesson green vegetable oil from the canteen at work, they just throw it our every week (approx 60 litres).
Now I am planning on collecting 20/30 litres and bring it home where I will filter it using a J cloth in the garage and then add to my my fuel tank at about a 60/40 mix.
Does anyone know if this will work, will I do any damage and has anyone else tried this with an Astra?
Any tips regarding the turbo would be greatly appreciated !

    Oh happy motoring?

If that second list shows your can can be 1-tanked, you should be ok. Do some serious research before you start throwing in veggie. Get it wrong and it will be expensive!

You are a bit late mate, I've been doing it since September 2009 which is when this thread started and why it is called "running my astra on veg" and not "can I run my astra on veg".

I do hope any new comers that have seen this and have thought that they would give it a go because they have a diesel car do take a good look at the sites you've linked as they are very useful. If anyone has a suitable car and wants to give it a go then I would recommend them, just do a bit of research first or read the thread from the beginning to see how I and others have done it successfully. Good luck to all who give it a go.
  • The astra away yet?
Putting mines over the scales today, just filling it with any old metal I can lay my hands on.

And a 5 month tax refund due too.
