BT connection charge

I'm about to move into my student house and need broadband, i was originally looking at O2 broadband as it's cheap (i have an O2 contract) and reliable. My landlady said that there's a phoneline in the house which just needs to be reactivated. However, when i phoned BT they said i'd have to pay a £125 connection charge, so i'm wondering if it's possible to trace whether i have a line with any other provider at my house?

My other option is to go with virgin media, which seem to be cheaper then shelling out £125 to bt

Paperclip4201 BT is offering a free installation deal which i believe is ending on 30/9 - you should be able to snap up this deal without paying the £125. There is an official BT rep on this forum, contact them for help. good luck

That BT offer (18 month contract, make 10 calls per month) has been extended until the end of the year now.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Thank you heinz!
Is there a minimum the call must last? And isn't it free weekend (and evening?) calls with BT anyway so i can just make 10 free landline calls a month? In other words, what's the catch? :P

I still think this is stupid, £125 to flick a switch. Whatever i do i'll be losing money (my house contract is 11 months so won't need it after that), but paying £67.50 is better then the £125.

With quidco, it seems that O2 broadband + BT line is cheaper then virgin :D
