RPI is currently (August figure ) -1.3% (yes minus 1.3%) are you saying the public sector pay should match that?
To be fair, public sector pay was measured against CPI since labour got in, so the public sector had to deal with below-RPI level increases in pay for a decade. Doesnt mean we cant share the pain with our private sector brothers and sisters though.

I would be willing to sacrifice 10-15% of my pay if it meant mandatory balanced budgets and whittling of non-esential public services. But we all know, thats not going to happen, is it?

Yeah but at least house prices will continue to rise!!! so tax hikes don't matter surely.......because people will have lots of wealth in thier houses!!!
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right

For each 2p rise in fuel tax, the government gets approx £550m a year.

Therefore, to raise £10bn, over a single year from fuel, we would need to add 18pence to each litre of fuel in duty.
You appear to have forgotten to multiply by 2
    10bn/550m*2p = 36.4p

Indeed I have. To be fair, was only relaying the stuff the bloke was saying.

    It's even bloody worse!

Ok, so, to pay off only this months borrowings on fuel duty over a year, it would cost us an extra £29 per 50 litre tank.

I thought it was bad to start with.

You can't just freeze welfare payments, and public sector wages.

You need to keep up with inflation / other sectors.

It would not bein in the countries interests to freeze a whole sectors wages while the private sector carries on getting bonuses and rises. Firstly it wouldn't save all that much and secondly, tax revenues would fall even further and a bigger mess would be created, inclduing unrest, thirdly, other welfare payments would go up such as tax credits to keep these people on par with the private sector.

Spoken like a true public sector employee as always Graham.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, most private sector employees this year have had either pay freezes or reductions, but - hey - you don't give a stuff about that do you, so long as the public sector are ok.

    absolutely wrong wrong wrong.

it was always measured against RPI as are state pensions, welfare benefits, student loans, index linked pensions, index linked savings
    and lots more...

why do you want mandatory balanced budgets?
at the current time that would probably mean 10 million unemployed, daily riots, your street burning, a massive collapse in the economy, troups on the streets etc

Having the troops on the streets would help put out the fires. And deal with the rioting. Economy's already collapsed. 10 million unemployed - well 3 million claiming, another 2 million not claiming, a million or so students and in 'courses' - we're pretty much there.

    So not much change really.

Are you Bob Crow of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union ?

    No way.

Graham can type (occasionally) a reasonably coherant post.

Crow struggles to put a three word sentence together, even when the speech has been written for him.
'In nature, there are neither rewards nor punishments - there are Consequences.'
