New house gas and electric

I got the keys to the house I've bought today (Woohoo and yahboo to the man who called me a time waster when I viewed his house) and have took meter readings but can't think what to do. I have an idea of who the bills are with but can I just ring who I want to have energy with?
My normally reasonably organised brain has melted today I think with the excitement of it all.

Congratulations!
I'm pretty sure you will need to find out who the current providers of gas and electricity are and give them your readings. I think you have to stick with them for 28 dayss after which you can change provider if you wish. But i might be wrong!0 -
Normally in all the legal bumf there is a questionnaire that the vendor fills in which has such details on it.0

Do I just ring up the existing suppliers or can I just ring my preferred one and ask them to do the power?0

I'd give your preferred one a call and ask them if you can transfer over to them as of now. They should be able to say if its a problem, don't see why, but would be interested anyhow as I'm going to be in the same position in a couple of weeks time. For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0

The details should be contained in the information pack the vendor completed for the sale. The one that lists which bits and pieces they are leaving etc.0

Yeah I'll give that a go and get back to you with how it went!0
