Advice please, re A&L card PPI

I'd welcome some advice please ... I have had an A&L card for years. I took it out over 20 years ago as a Chase Manhattan card. Somewhere along the way it became A&L and a few years ago, it was taken over by MBNA.
I am paying PPI on the amount currently outstanding on this card. But I have no idea when I agreed to take out the insurance, or even if I ever did agree. I suspect it "appeared" some years ago and I didn't realise how unfair the charges are and did nothing to cancel it.
My question is, can I try to reclaim? As I don't know full details of when the insurance was applied, would it be more sensible to use a reclaiming company, although I realise this will cost me if they are successful?
Also, if I cancel the PPI now, can I still put in a claim?
Any advice would be welcome.

Hi there,;)
I always say if you don't try you will never know.
With it being an old case though there may be some issues here, but I would give it a try.
If you still have your account number give it a shot, you do not need to write the amounts, but with the reasons you have you write them and they have 8 weeks to respond in full.
Keep at them until they either resolve or issue you with a final decision, I am not too sure if they were governed as such by the General Insurance (GISA) or FSA who taken over in Jan 2005, where the Financial ombudsman service are only mostly able to investigate complaints who were governed by those regulators, but no harm in giving it a try with a cost of a stamp.

The link above is Martin's useful guidelines of reclaiming with templates etc, very useful indeed.
I would suggest though you post by recorded delivery for your proof of posting.
If they argue about how old this is, maybe you could ask them then to reconsider the last 6 years.;)
Hope this helps, good luck and please keep us posted. CheersThe one and only "Dizzy Di"0 -

It wouldn’t be the first time that a card company has added PPI without the customer’s consent. If you do not recall agreeing to it, that may be the case. The lender will need to demonstrate that you knowingly agreed to the PPI being added i.e. the onus is on them to disprove rather than the other way around. If it wasn’t optional there is a good chance that it also breaches the consumer credit act and that the contract is unenforceable.
You can cancel and then claim back, as long as the claim goes in within 3 years of you becoming aware of the problem.0 -
