Silly question about breakdown cover

Hi, Im thinking of getting breakdown cover with Auto aid after reading about it on here. It says that you pay 30 something a year then each time you breakdown you pay on the spot and claim it back..... if i was with say AA or RAC dont you just pay a certain price per year then that covers everything as long as you choose the right cover? or do you still have to pay for it to be towed back and for repairs etc?

Thanks in advance

  • Why pay to be covered, then have to pay then claim it back? If you had a crash, would you pay for both cars to be repaired then claim it back?

I'd stick with AA type people...

It's a good idea if you have a reliable car that doesn't break down a lot, at least that way you pay £30 a year not £100+ for a service you might not use. With breakdown cover if you get national recovery you get towed all the way home, if you get local recovery you get 10 miles you have to pay roughly £2 amile there after. You'd have to pay for repairs yourself anyway.

Why? Because Autoaid is considerably cheaper than the alternatives; in my opinion it's worth the extra inconvenience.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

and sometimes you pay more than you need to.

:confused:How is that relevant? Every recovery vehicle I saw today (apart from AA/RAC) was an Autoaid person.
how many new cars come with autoaid cover
Probably none given that Autoaid covers the driver, not the vehicle

My Autoaid cover is £30 odd for recovery and home-start, covers any vehicle with repayment from Autoaid before I have to pay the credit card if the dates work out, no brainer.

err........because it's £37 (I paid 35 on renewal) and covers all vehicles for you and spouse (3 vehicles for £35 in our house).
So it's a cracking bargain, platinum cover and pays back really quickly.
Widely acknowledged on this site as a cracking deal and many people with good experiences.

Of course it's not suitable for everyone.
Not everyone has a credit card or ability to fund it.
My elderly parents would struggle with the form, so they have a different service.
Horses for course, but it's a cracking deal for those that can afford to pay for a week or two.

When I was renewing my breakdown cover I seriously considered autoaid but in the end decided to go with the AA. I liked the price of autoaid (who wouldn't?) and have a credit card to pay it but from reading reviews it seemed that a lot of the recovery people sent out where only interested in towing you to the garage rather than fix you at the roadside which the AA/Rac will try to do. So I wondered if, in the end, it would be a false economy!?

After quidco, joint AA cover with homestart was only £59 so not much in it!
  • whatever you do don;t go with First Call - they look cheap but their reviews are terrible & I'm in dispute with them over a claim as it seems many others are. MSE should stop promoting them. You DON'T even get what you pay for...
