Manufacturer Guarantee

Last year I had a steering column replaced in my car under warranty. Since then the warranty has expired and the fault has returned after 18 months.

In general will the part have a manufacturer's guarantee longer than one year? If so, can I go back to fix the issue again without being stung. My car is an '05' plate and would not expect the same fault in such a short space of time.

Also is it possible to retrieve maintenance carried out on a car during a warranty period if I contact the car manufacturer? This will verify the work undertaken.

Appreciate the feedback.

Is it a vauxhall or VW by chance?
  • If its VW they have pretty good records of what has been done. My dealer gaurantees their work for two years, but I imagine warranty work is excluded from this. If the car has dealer history then you may get a goodwill gesture as its a recurrent fault - worth a call to customer services / the dealer that did the work
  • It'll either be a VW or BMW. both have the same !!!!!! electric coloum that fails. Even if it's been replaced VW wont be interested in doing it again outside the warranty.

We've just had to pay out 780 quid for a Passat's coloum to be replaced. Which was replaced when it was 18 months old.

VW didn't want to know. !!!!!!...

or just avoiding vw altogether, quality german cars....

the only thing that is quality is the marketing department, very well designed machine
  • Its shocking how this myth of German engineering still exists, BMW/VW are really poor quality cars. When i worked for a firm who used to have lots of sales reps they all used VW passats and they were shocking. I really do not know how VW get away with it, but the cars needed constant topping up with oil on a weekly basis. Whereas the Nissan engines in the small trucks (ZD30) never ever needed any oil.
