Paypal - SMS security, do I need it?

I have been emailed by Paypal, as I expect all users will be, regarding an extra level of security whereby Paypal send you a code text message whenever you log in to allow you to complete the login process. I realise this is probably a good security idea but it is also a bit of a pain having to have a charged up and active mobile ready and waiting beside the PC (I am of the older generation that hates mobiles and rarely have it with me and even more rarely have it switched on!).

Paypal do not say this SMS security is compulsory but I am wondering if I decide not to use it and then my account is hacked or details/money stolen, would they then say I was negligent for not using all available security measures and refuse to compensate me?

No good if you're not in a mobile coverage area.

I've been using it for some time, it's nice to have an extra layer of security on paypal as I don't trust it that much.
But, if you haven't got your mobile with you (or are too lazy to walk into the next room where you left it), the login system just asks you a single extra question such as "what is you bank account number" before letting you in anyway.
