Eon billing
I moved into a flat 5 years ago as the second owner. the first owner never moved in as they bought it off plan as an investment so meter reading for electricity / gas were 0. After 6 months I got a letter from EON asking for my details so they could bill me for gas. I provided these and have been getting billed without issue. However my electricity was a different matter. I waited 12 months to see if anyone was going to ask me for details for billing to begin but they never did. so I phoned EON asking if they also provided my electricity and after going through plot numbers my two postcodes and house number etc they said there was no record of them supplying it or their competition ( i didnt exist).
I thought oh well somone will want money off me soon so I lived the life of free electricity.
5 years on I have just received an email from EON stating they have just noticed my electricity had not been changed over to them from the builders and would I like to give them the serial number / reading so billing can start.
am i right in thinking I should not have to pay the whole amount and only pay 1/5th (12 months worth) as they were at fault changing the billing over from the builders and I should have 12 months to pay this off.

Hi funscott
Sounds as though the electricity was not transferred from the builders until recently. Unfortunately, this sometimes happens with new builds.
As you have contacted us about this before, you could well have a case under the billing code. Depends on the full circumstances really.
I would call us again and ask for a full review of your account. You already have a gas account and there could be notes on there about the electricity.
There will be an electric account somewhere. Possibly under the builders name or a plot number.
Make a note of your Meter Serial Number as this will help us track the account down.
Once the account has been identified ask for the billing code to be applied. If it does fall under this then we will only back bill for 12 months.
We will also be happy to set up a payment arrangement once a balance has been agreed.
Hope this helps. Give me a shout if you need any more info.
