Right, I'm taking the plunge - I've owned the domain name to my house for a couple of years now, and want to start building my own webpages using that domain name. I've just done a google search this evening, and quite frankly I'm stumped! I see that someone has mentioned 123domainnames and they came up in a google search, and whilst I'm not particularly thick, I can't work out how I can use the domain name I own to build a website - it not going to anything particularly fancy, however I do need more than 5 pages as I'm planning one day on running a B&B from the house so I need something that can be added on later in the process. I can write the text and supply photos which can be uploaded/downloaded whatever the phrase is, but would really appreciate some advice on how to get started. Books, websites, recommendations or anything else anyone could provide would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Alyth

Here are some links I found useful when starting out designing websites:

I use Macromedia Dreamweaver to create the sites, and Adobe Photoshop and ImageReady for graphics. There must be a dozen or more ways to design a website. A lot of reading and trial and error is advised before starting on the intended project.

my god, I only posted half a hour ago - thank you so so much for your replies, I'll never get to bed now! I've got dreamweaver, and I've just been rummaging about in the library looking for web design books, I have one which is a massive tomb about learning HTML - from what I've read I didn't think that was necessary, is that correct?
Again, thanks so much for your quick postings, I'm about to start and go through them now, just poured another glass of wine in anticipation of ploughing through the info you've all posted, my brain will be active all night now!

get dreamweaver for dummies. Its a great starting point when your learning the programs.
With dreamweaver you dont have to learn html, you can create the page by designing rather than typing script.
Also try researching other websites and nick the ideas that you like. I use dreamweaver & flash at work and it is easy to use once you master the basics.
Enjoy th e wine :-)

Nah - stuff HTML!!! LOL. Dreamweaver does it all for you.
CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is a favourite of mine and Dreamweaver supports the format.0 -

You mention you have the domain name, but you don't have a hosting package?
A domain name can cost £10 a year, but you still need a computer/server to store your web page content right?
The domain name gets simply converted into the ip address of where your information is stored. So if your server is 225.25.80.8 for example, instead of typing http://225.25.80.8 a user could type http://www.thedomainnameyoubought.com if set up correctly!
Search google for internet hosting. I'm not sure what the best deals are as mine is hosted by a friend, but make sure you go for plain hosting and not a domain name as well.
You should then have been given instructions when you bought the domain name on how to forward it to an ip address, i.e your hosting destination.
You would then upload your web page to the server thats hosting your web page, which would incidentally be the domain name once set up
Hope ive helped..[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

Hi
Take a look at this site: http://www.easywebsitesbuilder.net/sebase/testdrive_home.jsp?uno=428487770 -
Try here http://www.jamroll.co.uk/ for free hosting to any website written in English . You must have your own domain name, there is a very small catch, 5 small links in the footer of each page of your site in return for us hosting your websites.
Worth a look and for experimenting and you could always change host if not suitable . Good luckI run because I like BEER.....

Hi Alyth
Building your own site can be great fun, but also really frustrating.
When you get to the tearing your hair out stage have a look at
http://www.go-bedandbreakfast.co.uk - you can get a free site there with an easy to use content management system.
cheers
