Contaminated fuel - Who Pays ?

Hi

My car is in the garage and they have discovered it has had contaminated fuel put in it..I have just filled it.

I have contacted the fuel garage, and discovered they are a small independent.

Anyone know the procedure how I get them to pay my costs as the fuel was from them.

Thanks

You put it in, you chose the wrong fuel and stood there with the nozzle in your hand while the vehicle filled.
  • I think you all have it slightly wrong. I have a receipt that proves I used the correct one, the contamination must of been in there tanks.

contaminated to me means that the there is something in the fuel that shouldn't be there, not a complete different type of fuel, ie diesel in the car instead of unleaded.

I would have thought your complaint laid with the fuel station, but you would no doubt need an engineers report to confirm the fuel contamination (hopefully others would be effected who fuelled up there!)

Didn't Tescos have a fuel contamination saga recently? Might be worth googling to see how that went.

    That's how I read it. :)

Are they sure that is what it is - would they be prepared to put that in writing, so you can take it up with the fuel garage?

Hi Penny, first you need to ask the garage to establish where they contamination came from. It is petrol or diesel? The lining of diesel tanks can, over a period of time if the tank is never full, become dry and flaky, causing contamination, so you'll need to rule this out first.

If the contamination came from the filling station I would contact your local Trading Standards to see there there have been any other incidents from the same filling station and take it from there.

As for all those who have jumped on the 'oh it's your own fault' bandwagon, try reading the post properly first

Trading Standards are responsible for ensuring petrol isn't contaminated. Speak to them asap.

This happened to me a few years back. We filled up the car with the correct type of fuel and within 10 miles the car started stalling and wouldn't restart.

I went back to the garage in a friends car the next day and mentioned the problem and the garage claimed to have had no other complaints. However, after the car was fixed (new fuel pump and filter) I contacted the garage again and this time they acknowledged there had been a contamination on the same day I had bought the fuel and they reimbursed me with the full cost of the work on my car.

Try asking them and if they don't acknowledge the mistake, keep trying.

Exactly!!!! Sorry, can't help the OP, but it drives me mad when people jump in putting the blame without even reading the question properly!

Mum works in a petrol station so I asked her, IF you have the receipt to prove you filled with the right fuel then they legally have to pay to sort out the car. If you don't have a receipt then it's your problem. Therefore always get a receipt :D
