Has anyone got any ideas how I can stop my puppy from coming upstairs? I already have baby gates to prevent him from entering some rooms but I have a banister on the stairs so the baby gate won't fit

You can get some thin wooden trellising for plants from most "cheap" shops ... only a pound or so. You know the sort, it expands sideways or you attach it lengthways for a climbing plant.
Couldn't you expand it a bit sideways and tie it to the wall at one side and a bannister at the other? I would have thought it would have been enough to keep back a puppy!
The only other thing would be to put the baby gate on the hallway door or door leading to the stairs, to keep puppy right away from them ... would that be an option?
I know you can get some baby gates that push in at both sides at the top, then they expand to fit the gap, but I can see your problem with the banister though ... it wouldn't be stable enough if it's a spindly banister ..0 -
I have a net on my stairs, the strong elastic ones that you hang toys in or put in a car. Hook it to the handrail on one side and the bannister on the other and I put a broom handle at the bottom to weigh it down a bit. Just unhook it to go upstairs.0

I've always just trained my dogs not to by saying no if they step a foot on the stairs, never had any problems (puppy as well as full grown dogs).
As long as you are consistant there shouldn't be a problem. (Obviously only works if you are there though!)

I won't always be home so I really need to find some way of preventing access...don't want him to be able to get into too much trouble while I'm out lol!!0 -
Can you not block it? Thankfully I can keep our pup in the living room because we have a door to keep him behind. Can you not do that? I have also got a dog gate on our stairs that have bannisters. I just hooked the end of the gate to one of the long things, can't think of what they are called0

Please think about what the long things are...do you mean extenders? I can't confine him too the living room coz there's too much stuff he can get into mischief with. He has the run of the hall and the kitchen...just need to find out how to block the stairs!!0 -
