This is what's crap about cars and garages unfortunately. I understand it's annoying as all these problems seem related, and appear to have been caused by the garage, but you will have a hard time proving they are to blame. They did the work they did and those were individual jobs. If you want the headgasket replaced then unfortunately you will have to pay for parts and labour for that job which is likely to be quite pricey. The right thing to do is to never go to that garage again, and find one that charges a reasonable rate but can be trusted.

The headgasket may have gone once it got the back pressure in the coolant system from the new thermostat.

Bang on anewman:T, all about doing it yourself or using a trusted garage, they do exist.

To the astra owner, I too don't think you will stand a chance in claiming from the 1st garage. Also lifes a bit too short for the hassle it will cause you, move on and take the advice of anm.;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

If its not starting on the key, but will bump start then theres got to be an electrical fault somewhere (does it attempt to start on the key, or do you turn the key and nothing happens?)

In terms of Head Gasket, are you sure its failed?? Water loss on the K series engine does not nessecarily mean HGF but is a primary cause of it happening! (there are a multitude of places water can leak)

Does the oil or water look like chocolate milkshake? Does the water smell like exhaust - these are two of the easiest ways to spot HGF.

If you are having problems with the car (of any description) then a 60 mile round trip is not a clever idea. - Why not get the train?

For better advice than you will get here get onto www.mg-rover.org and get on the forum :T

(For the record, I have a Rover 114 which I replaced the head gasket on in Sept - so I'm pretty familiar with this stuff!)
Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male:

  • its probably not starting due lack of compression, and if youve driven it far theres a good chance of damage to the head, theyre very soft. even getting it fixed it`s likely to happen again.if it was me if the car is particularrly nice i would find an accident damaged 2.0, diesel or honda 1.6 engine and transfer that into it, either that or chalk it up to experience and get a less troublesome car. to fix it properly (head skim, full new gasket set, new stretch bolts, water pump, flush system and new coolant and oil) at a garage would likely cost more than the car is worth. i had 3 214s before i learnt my lesson, the last one was a very nice car (clean gsi with full leather and aircon)so i found a 220 turbo with accident damage for £100 and swapped the engine, gearbox, loom, brakes and suspension on to it, took 2 days and an evening. £5 for an engineers report, and my insurance went up £30
