Going to uni - am i entitled to anything??

I've always thought if someone can't understand something as simple as how the student loan works, how on earth are they going to cope with the level work required at univeristy? This is a common fallacy and doubtless prevents lots of people from going to uni, especially the ridiculous stories you hear about students being 10s of thousands of £ in 'debt'.
You don't pay it back unless you get a job earning over something like £15K a year. If you never earn that amount, you'll never have to pay your loan off. Ever.
Interest isn't comparable to the extortionate rates set by banks and credit cards, it's actually reasonable, so no chance of the debt spiralling out of control. A student loan has to be one of the least important things to consider about going to uni.0 -
I NEED my car because i live in the country - ie - the middle of nowehere - IF i got rid of my car i would need a lift into the nearest town where there is a bus stop - EVERY day - as i'm in uni every day - my mum and dad have other commitments and i can't expect them to do this for me everyday!!
But forget it, i was only asking for a little help but you don't seem very nice - no need!0 -
Check out the parking at the university, some don't allow first years to park on campus.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

Hmm, any little help going, just so long as you don't have to take a loan like the rest of us! :rolleyes:0 -
Seriously, how DO you think other students manage?0

It never ceases to amaze me how many people live in the middle of nowhere, when it comes to the possibility of getting rid of a car.

Surely if so many people live in the middle of nowhere, they could car share?
Gone ... or have I?0 -
Just to stand up for the OP - I live 35 miles from Uni and am considering leaving Halls and commuting (£95pw rent vs £7 there and back plus parking with my car).
Where I live has NO bus-routes to where I want to go, plus the nearest train station is 7 miles away and then i'd need a bus to get from there to Uni. There is no-one I could car share with (and yes, I have looked), and getting rid of my car isn't an option because without it I could get...nowhere. I couldn't even get a job if I was at home without a car.Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -

I don't think you understand. They are not having a go at the OP for having a car, but the OP is complaining about a car and no money when he has chosen not to take out a student loan.0 -
The OP should count themselves lucky for having their tuition fees paid for free, us English have it harder.

Regarding the student loan, SAAS policy is that if you don't apply for the student loan (from the Government, at <1% interest at the minute IIRC) then you clearly don't need any financial support and so will get no funding from the university, or anything else from SAAS.
I'd strongly recommend getting a student loan for living costs, you might get a portion of it as a grant - and as people have said you only have to pay it back if you earn enough (which you probably will), and it is taken out of your wages by your employer, like Income Tax and National Insurance Contributions.
I assume you will get a mortgage at some point in your future - I would say a student loan is comparable to a mortgage, it's an investment in your future - however it is a much better deal.0
