  • I'm in the same boat at the moment, need a lot of plastering doing in my new house. I'm trying to price jobs up based on how long would it take one man to do it and what's a reasonable daily rate for their trade + cost of materials.

So I reckon that a decent plasterer could do 2 ceilings in a day, so that's 2 days at about £150 a day say? So that's £300, say a generous £100 for materials and that's £400. I don't think i'd want to pay a lot more than that.

Just my humble opinion, but would welcome any corrections people want to make

£150 a day, I'd double that, in which case around £800 sounds quite reasonable.
Get a few more quotes to see.

  • You think £300 a day is a reasonable rate for a plasterer? They'd only have to work 200 days a year to gross £60k a year.

Maybe if the job was plastering the grand mosque in Baghdad :p

I'm in Coventry though where ex welders and paint sprayers need to turn their hand to something.

Well, it's up to the plasterers to quote how much they want, but I don't think £800 is a bad price.
Remember that it's hard graft and this money also has to cover their equipment, travel, holidays, tax etc.

    It's the following ceilings:

    kitchen
    landing
    stair well
    lounge
    bathroom

Each one will require support planks etc to be moved into the room, the stairwell will probably require some fiddling around to get access to everything.

As I originally said, get two more quotes and see what they are like.

i had my lounge done, all walls, and a new ceiling put up and plastered, roughly 7m x 5m and it cost £650 and took 2 days and a morning. The finish is smoother than a pane of glass, hope that can offer a guide for comparison. I live in Herts by the way

Let's just break down Heath Robinson's £150 a day is reasonable ? let's assume the guy is fully legit.

    Tax - £40
    Travel Cost - £10
    Employ a Labourer - £50
    Liability Insurances - £4
    Upkeep of a van - £10

So the plasterer will clear £36 a day, good wages HR ?

I charge £38 an hour for the guys I employ when they do building work, and clear £9 an hour after all overheads.

Ill do it for £130 per ceiling if all the crap is out of all the rooms and the kettle is constantly on.

+ trowel wear and his lunch and he's not left with anything. It's a cruel world we live in.

Well we all have to pay tax mate and most of us have to travel to work. If I was the guy in your example I think i'd try to do without the labourer, cause he's really cutting into his profits :p

My original example was based on what I want to be paying. Probably a little on the low side. The OP's quote seemed very high. But then I've not seen the place and there may be a lot of furniture needs moving etc and she might not even own a kettle

I got all the ceilings in my (small) 3 bed terrace plastered over (nasty artex) -the plasterer did two celings a day and charged £450 for the lot - thats kitchen, livingroom/diner, hall/stairs, bathroom and 3 bedrooms. He was the cheapest quote - the highest was £1500, so shop around.
He did a good job too, but was very messy, so maybe he didn't charge as much because I had to do all the cleaning up?!:undecided
