Rather than getting loads of more toys as presents on his birthday from other friends.....whats the best way of wording it on his invitation cards to say i rather have clothes or something rather than toys on his birthday???

Take him to alton towers instead of having a party? If you can afford it take his friends to Alton Towers too. If they bring anything at all it will be money in a card - they wouldn't bring a large gift :D

Its my son birthday soon (8).....and as he does not play with toys anymore (DS, PC etc taken over) all his current toys are just siting there. He hardly plays with his toys now even if i dont allow electronic games. I feel pretty disappointed as he has loads of really cool lego and transformers sets.

Last year my son had a party invite which said that (if we wanted to give a gift), money would be fine as the birthday boy was saving up for a Wii game. I was quite happy to be given a reason to avoid a trip to the shops to buy unwanted plastic tat which would go to waste so just put some cash in a card. Life's too short, frankly!

My DS is like this, no interest in toys even as a baby. Sounds like yours turned ok so there is hope then!

Lol, yes. Its apparently an inquisitive mind. DS is on the gifted register and very clever so dont worry! lol

Mrbrightside842- you can actually buy reasonable clothing for under a fiver at places such as Asda. Note I was proposing just to ask parents no toys and not state any preference.

Bestspud – Glad I am not asking you!

Mrcow – my son does not just sit there playing games or watching tv all day. I do restrict his time, if he is not doing these then he play with something silly like part of a toy such as a odd wheel!! Anyways thanks for your concern.

    Clairehi – thanks for support.
jellyhead - great idea but shame Alton towers is not near us (nor is ant other theme park)

To be honest i would really prefer clothes! I had seen on some adult wedding party invitations the words "No boxed gifts" where i presume they are implying to keep gifts as money or vouchers

I don't think you can blame anyone for thinking that you wanted clothes...

Bestspud – Glad I am not asking you!

But you were - you shouldn't ask questions on an open forum if you only want people to agree with you.

Because this poster agreed with you?
  • totally agree with clairehi! do not see the problem with stating no presents but if they would like to give a token gift anything up to five pounds would be lovely to contribute towards something bigger,

i know i would prefer that to buying something the kid either already has or wouldn't like. may seem cheeky but i find it hard to buy presents for around a fiver so i normally end up spending around a tenner plus wrapping paper etc.

Lol, I'm glad you're not asking me as I'd have to work out a way of politely telling you to go forth! :p

You're sounding quite defensive. All I was trying to say is that my son would sit and play on the XBox every day if he were allowed to.

He's exactly the same age as your boy.

Sometimes they need encouragement to play with stuff. Sometimes they just need a bit of encouragement to get it out and start building etc. Obviously as kids they like doing lots of different stuff, but often you have to point them in the right direction or they'll just stick with what they know.

Blimey, there seems to be a thread on this very subject every week .

Anyway, my opinion remains the same - I wouldn't be particularly thrilled with an invite telling me what to/what not to give. If its a close friend's child then I would always ask what they want, or I'd know the child well enough to know what they like, or I'd give money. But as someone else has pointed out, with class parties the present tends to be more of a token than anything else.

What about sports equipment? I always end up buying cricket sets, inflatable crocodiles etc. for them because they need them before their birthday arrives (obviously I don't buy everything new every year, I just mean that I buy sport, garden etc. toys at easter-ish).

    Roller blades, perhaps?
