Washing Machine Vs Washer Dryer

I am having quite a dilemma which I thought some of you thoughtful people on here may have a n opinion about. Moving in to a new house next month, 2 bedroom new build, Kitchen not massive but big enough for a table and chairs along the wall opposite units etc.
Space for a washing machine but not really a tumble dryer as well.
My partner and I are both very active, he goes to the gym everyday and we both train/ play rugby, both have to wear a uniform for work.... So in a nutshell we have a fair amount of washing to get through, probably a medium load every 2 days....
Here comes my dilemma, have been looking at washer dryers but a) they are more expensive and on a FTB budget the cheaper the better b) in order to use the dryer you have to significantly reduce the amount of "wet" clothes you have in the drum (or so I've been told...)

Now I have always had a tumble dryer previously, and whilst I prefer to hang my washing out/ on airers there are the occasions where you have too much washing and not enough drying space (especially in the winter in a small kitchen) and so use the dryer.

Other option is to fork out a bit more on a washing machine with a high spin cycle ( I think is the term) so that the clothes are almost nearly dry when they come out.... and then put them out to dry outside in the summer.... or fill the kitchen up with airers in the winter (something I'm space conscious of!)

Your thoughts and suggestions please.....
Thanks!!

  • Hi There,

I have known people that have had a built in dryer inside a washer and they never got me good reviews.

Why not get a normal washer and have it in the house and a seprate dryer but put the dryer in an outside shed. Then you can use both at the same time.

My husband was a washer repair man for several years. He always said we would never have a washer drier as they are quite prone to breakdowns. Hope this helps.

I have had both. TBH I much prefer two separate appliances, as it is easier and quicker. But given the choice of a washer/dryer and no dryer, I'd go for the W/D every time.

  • All these 2 in 1 devices always seem to go wrong now days. Like TV's with built in DVD players on them

Washer dryers are great, as long as you don't acutally want dry clothes. They don't product dry clothes, just really hot damp steamy clothes that take three times as much effort to iron.

Get a washer and either a tumble dryer or airer. I haven't used the dryer bit (beause it is sooooooo crap) for 18months now, washing line when it's dry and clothes airer inside when its wet.
  • I have a waher dryer for space reasons. I never use the dryer. As sandiep says they don't really dry the washing. Have you got an entrance porch or room in the bathroom for a tumble dryer?

We have a washer with a good spin cycle and no dryer. If I hang clothes on the airer before we go to bed (over the winter) they usually seem to be dry by the time we come home from work the next day. Our machine was a bit more expensive than the more basic models, however we had a secondhand one before (with a worse spin) and it did seem to take a lot longer to get everything dry. We have a similar lifestyle to yours so I understand what you mean, we might get a dryer in the garage at some point in the future!

We have a washer dryer as there is nowhere to put a seperate tumble dryer. No shed or garage and kitchen and other rooms too small.

It is really good although I only use it when I have to. The clothes come out really dry and the onle inconvenience is not being able to wash and dry at the same time. Would recommend one if like us you have no room for seperate appliances.

people must have some weird washer-dryers if they dont dry the clothes.

we have a Zanussi, & after a wash cycle, just take out those items that are best not put through a dryer, eg shirts, & everything else drys fine.

    idea that would require work:
could you create a laundry area next to your bathroom?
if the 2nd bedroom adjoins the bathroom, & isnt being used as a bedroom, could you partition off enough space to fit a washer & a dryer?
they could also be stacked, so would only need the floor space of 1
  • Thanks for all your suggestions.... those of you with washer dryers.... any experience of faults or breakdowns?? What makes of washer dryers do you have?? Thanks
