alternative to Carefresh bedding required

I have 4 gerbils living in a good size tank. I have been using Carefresh bedding, but it's costly. Anyone recommend an alternative to this bedding?

  • Hi devil (that sounds so wrong). I believe what your looking for is megazorb. http://www.northerncropdriers.co.uk/megazorb.htm You'll not likely to find it in your typical pet shop as its primarily use as a horse but that should tell you just how absorbant it is. I find it a little more dusty then carefresh and as it comes from dried wood pulp can sometimes have a slight odour but isn't really noticable. It comes in huge bags so lasts quite a while and our local supplied charges £6-7 a bag. For our guinea pigs we used to fill it up at the start of week 1, removing the bedding each day as required, top up on week 2 and carry on removing as required, then start of the third week go back to week 1 (start completely fresh).

Some online places do deliver but the delivery isn't cheap. Your best finding your local stockist at http://www.northerncropdriers.co.uk/stockists.htm . It may be a local farm or a bulk pet supplied that stocks it, you won't find it at pets at home ;)

What about just shredded paper? Buy a cheap paper shredder all the documents you dont want anymore store them and shred them for bedding, its cheap.
Theres 2 types of horse owner, a person who owns a horse and a horsey person ;)
  • Not sure regualr paper with print on is suitable or edible. Gerbils gnaw through anything, so I wouldn't want them poisioned by the ink.

paper also stinks more for some reason
why not use saw dust or shavings
  • saw dust or shavings arn't good for small animals. They cause allergies and can cause liver problems.

I want my little adoptees to have the best life I can afford.

    Hello
I know this is an old one but I've just bought megazorb for my guinea pigs, £12 with delivery for a whopping 85 litres - very impressed, two have had a whizz since I put it in and I cant even see it never mind smell it.

Great suggestion thanks, although my landlord took the delivery adn asked me where I was planning on keeping my pony:rotfl:

Farmway online sell it for £6.19 with £4.99 delivery. Its much cheaper if you can find a stockist as its the delivery that makes it more expensive - do you have any horse shops by you?

Ermm don't think so. Don't mind paying the postage if the product does the job. Still cheaper than carefresh.
