Dowloading photos from Nokia phone camera

I used to be able to download pics from my Nokia 6300's memory card by connecting a cable from the phone to a USB port on my laptop and it basically did the rest, just needing me to acknowledge modes on the phone, then save into my photo files.

However I now have rather a lot of photos stored on the phone (went on holiday without a proper camera), and it is not responding when I connect it to my laptop. It comes up on the phone display with "USB data cable connected, select mode", where I just click the main button as there aren't any options on that screen, then I select Data storage on the next phone display, which results in a "loading" progress bar that completes, but then nothing happens:confused:. It used to open a window on the computer from where I could select and save the photos.

Could it be that due to the amount of photos on the phone it doesn't have enough memory capacity to transfer them, or the computer doesn't have enough storage left, or is there any other explanation?

I have a small pop-out sliding "tray" in the side of my laptop, that looks like it is meant for data storage cards, but none of the appertures in it are anything like the shape of my phone's memory card, and when I put it in (or rather on) the nearest fit and clicked it into place nothing happened.

Why is everything technical so flipping complicated? :(

Chances are your phone takes a mini SD card, the phone suppliere would normally supply an adapter for it with the phone.

That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • Assuming your laptop has bluetooth and the reason it's not working is the phone memory is over full you could try bluetoothing several pictures over to see if the free's up enough space on the mobile for you to be able to send the rest by USB.

Aha Penrhyn, I'm sure I've got something like that somewhere but had no idea what is is meant for :o. I'll hunt it out!

Medders I have never activated Bluetooth on this phone (or any other for that matter) as it is among the many things I don't really understand :o.

Thank you both for your patience, I realise people like me are a pain in the posterior!

I've found it, and slotted the memory card in, but the adapter thing doesn't appear to "sit" in the tray correctly in any position. It just slides around loosely on it.

Off to hunt out the laptop's instructions next... :(.

Can't find laptop's instrucs, but going by the tiny display on the side where the card slot is I've put the adapter + card in as near as possible to the approximate place it might be meant to go. Nothing happening though.

Just out of interest, how would you recognise if your computer has something in the card reader slot? I mean it isn't a USB port and it isn't a CD drive, so where would it show up on "My Computer"? I can't find anything anywhere.

  • Does your laptop have bluetooth though?

If so I have a Nokia 6300 so can give you step by step instructions on how to send pictures via it.

How do I find out? Don't have any instrucs for the laptop to hand.

It's a Compaq Presario bought in 2006 or thereabouts.

I don't really want to "send" my pics anywhere, just save them into my photos file.

  • Someone that knows more about laptops will no doubt be along shortly to tell you if your laptop has bluetooth.
Don't worry about the sending bit of bluetooth all it does it copy the picture from your phone direct to your pictures folder on your laptop just the same as using the cable

If you have your card in the card slot, it should show up in "my computer", alongside your cd/dvd drive. It may have the name SD card or Removable storage/ drive or anything that wasn't there before. Just double-click to open, then search the folders inside. An alternative would be to get a card reader for your memory card, assuming it's a micro sd, you can get one from your local 99p shop, or poundland, then just plug in to a usb slot. Hope this helps.
Whichever method you decide on, you will need to drag and drop your pics to an open folder on your laptop.

That sounds like something I could cope with! It is a SanDisk memory card, they seem to be pretty commonplace. There's no way it is going to work via the existing card slot thingy, it is obviously not compatible, so I will look out for a USB reader. Thanks for your reply, much appreciated as are all the others :T.
