    1. Ditch the preinstalled McAfee antivirus
    2. Install a good free one such as Avast Free Edition
    3. Install Spyware Blaster
    4. Install Adaware
    5. Install Spybot Search & Destroy
    6. Install A squared in case anything ever does get through (unlikely if you keep all these up to date) All free and easily found by Google search.

I have used these for a few years now with NO virus or spyware issues.

Just don't do it in that order. Download the new stuff before you uninstall the old stuff.

Stick Microsoft spyware into google and download Microsoft's "defender" software.
They're going to start charging for it at some stage but get the benefit of it while it's free.
And don't forget (if you're on broadband) to download all the Windows patches, Dell are usually about 40 behind...

and make sure the Windows firewall is switched on.

I disagree - uninstall McAfee BEFORE fully registering it then go online and IMMEDIATELY download Avast followed by the others without visiting anywhere else on the net. Good site for all the best freebies here http://www.filehippo.com/

If you are using broadband, get a router with NAT and it's own firewall as additional protection for your laptop.

    Don't visit too many pr0n sites ;-)

It's the McAfee security suite that's installed on Dells.

Personally I wouldn't leave a computer unprotected while you are downloading anything

At the very least the poster needs a good firewall installed BEFORE they use the internet for anything & I would either download it to another computer & copy it across via a CD or flash drive or get it off a free CD from a computer mag

I'd also be very wary of googling for software as it can easily give the wrong result & would use a known website like download.com to download from.
