Hi
I've just taken the meter readings (for the first time ever apart from bill meter readings) and am slightly confused at the figures.
For the gas it looks like I've only used £28 worth of gas since Aug 11 when the meter was read by EON but the electricity is a massive £109.91 so can someone tell me if I've done the calculations wrong?
Basically I've taken the number of units from the last bill from the current reading and then multiplied by the primary unit cost.
I've had a look at previous bills and none of them have shown a useage this high so I'm slightly concerned - especially as the last bill was done on a reading and not estimated.
Does anyone knwo what the primary useage threshhold is for the Price Protection scheme as this may aslo be a factor.

Most of E-on's tariffs have thresholds of 900 kWh pa for electricity and 2680 kWh pa for gas. So that's 225 and 670 per quarter.
For electricity the meters measure in kWhs so you can work directly with the prices but with gas meters you need to first convert the reading from meter units to kWhs. On imperial meters (those marked with ft3) multiply reading by 32. On metric meters (m3) multiply by 11.2. (Approximately. Exact sums will be printed on your gas bill.)
But your bills are not unreasonable - £28 for gas for the last month and a half is appropriate. £110 is a lot of electricity but are you sure your starting point is from a meter reading and not from an estimate? Oh wait, never mind - the problem is more likely that E-on have ENORMOUS tier 1 rates and you say you have just multiplied by this primary rate so your actual bill is between a half and a third of that :-
ie, 11 Aug to 20 Sep is 1 month plus 9 days or 39 days.
every quarter (or 91 days) only 225 kWhs are charged at tier 1. For 39 days that's (39/91)x225 or 96 units.
So only 96 units are charged at tier 1 - the rest are the much cheaper tier 2 rate.
Plus there'll be a 13 to 20% discount depending on tariff and region.0 -
Thank you for that ....the electricity now comes out at approx £57 which for the 6 week period I can live with, although I think we will still need to rethink about our electricity useage......the tv being on but no-one really watching it for example can stop for starters, lol
can anyone suggest any other ways I can cut down - we already have energy saving light bulbs and we do tend to turn the lights off when we're not in the room so I'm not sure how else we can cut down.2014 Target;

Hi mountainofdebt
Kim has given a very full explanation regarding our primary rates. However, thought I would just add a bit of info about how we may be able to help you reduce consumption.
Check out our website. There are some useful tips to help you cut back. In particular, have a look at the interactive house, our 10:10 campaign and the Energy Menu. All have ideas about ways to save and are presented in, hopefully, a user friendly way.
We also have a specialist Energy Efficiency team dedicated to helping people reduce their energy usage. Give them a call with a list of your appliances. They will be happy to advise you.
Ask them for a copy of a booklet called 100 ways to help you save money by saving energy. It is free and has a lot of useful advice.
Hope this helps but give me a shout if you need any more info. Always happy to help.
