Odd credit report

Hi board
Yesterday I tried to get a mobile phone contract with Orange (currently on Pay as you Go) and they rejected it, as their credit check came back unapproved. I was perplexed so went to Experien website to get a report, which came up as Good! Basically said only 23% of people have better credit rating than me.
BUT, I also noticed that my main HSBC Current Account, ISA and HSBC Mastercard were not listed on the report at all. My Natwest Account that I hardly use was there, and an old TopMan store card that has been settled, but my main HSBC accounts which I always use are not to be seen.

Is this why Orange came back with a bad credit check, because I supplied them with my HSBC card details for the payments? And why would HSBC accounts not be on there? Not sure what to do as I need to sort this out if I am going to be able to purchase other contracts in the future.

Cheers

James

    Welcome to MSE!

You can contact HSBC - there's no harm in asking - but you cannot insist the bank reports your accounts to Experian. The decision rests with the lender.

Btw, savings accounts, such as your ISA, would not be listed, as these do not involve credit facilities.

May I ask whether your HSBC bank and credit card accounts are shown on Equifax files?

Just a thought. Were the HSBC accounts opened more recently than your NatWest one? If so, have you moved since the NatWest and TopMan accounts were opened?

  • Both equifax and experian are missing my HSBC details which is possibly why I had a declined application for the orange contract. I was told by HSBC phone banking to take a printed report to my branch and they can contact both agencies with relevant details.

Hope it will be as easy as that! :)

    Thanks for your feedback.

I don't bank with HSBC, but my HSBC cc has been reported to Experian and Equifax. Has your postcode changed or does the format of your address vary, by any chance? (This can happen where new build, a house name or a block of apartments is involved or where a landlord has converted a house to flats.) You'd be surprised how often discrepancies arise. It's not necessarily an error. Very often it comes down to a difference of opinion as to how an address should be formatted rather than an actual mistake.

Perhaps HSBC can shed some light. Please keep us posted.
