Insurance for provisional driver

If I was to buy a car to learn to drive in (drive on a provisional licence accompanied by a full licence holder) can I get insurance?

How does it work? I know of someone driving round on a provisional licence, unaccompanied. Surely they would be uninsured?

Anyone know the ins and outs?

cheers

When I bought my first car I was on a provisional license. I got insurance for myself as the main driver and my mum as a named driver. I never drove on my own (too nervous more than anything, although think it would have been breaking the law). Managed to get my insurance through Direct Line. Don't remember having any problems getting it. Main reason for getting insurance in my own name was mainly so I could build up my own no claims. Good luck.

If you are going to be the only driver of the car, then the insurance will have to be in your name. But I insured my husband on my car, as an additional driver with a provisional license and it only added a couple of quid on to the annual premium.

As for driving unaccompanied on a provisional license. That's illegal and imo dangerous and stupid. No full license also makes the insurance invalid.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

Getting insurance as provisional driver is no different (other than premium) to any other person getting car insurance. Remember though that you will have either a young persons or inexperienced drivers excess to pay for accidental damage claims (if you have a fully comp policy) on top of what ever voluntary excess you choose - when I used to work in claims we used to see a fair number of young drivers who had fully comp but their excess (£550 - £150 vol £350 young driver) was greater than the total loss value of the vehicle so they had wasted their money getting fully comp other than for glass claims.

Remember that the main driver of the vehicle has to be the policyholder or if they are not you must state which of the named drivers will be as the policy has to be rated on the most common driver for it to be valid.

Driving without a relevantly qualified person is illegal and would invalidate your insurance. Things get complicated with RTA insurer rules etc but that is the crux of it.
