oh and Kaz, don't forget that you need to ask for fuel money for the whole trip - both out and back.

You're not in it to make a profit, but neither should you be out of pocket for your genorosity with your car and time.

Don't forget that any mieage you're doing also means wear to the tyres and servicing costs too. Doubling up the actual petrol used will be fairly reasonable.

40p a mile is not unreasonable when a taxi is over £1 a mile.

When i do it i just say 'just gimme a couple of quid' and tell them to stick it in with the rest of my change. There's no way i could charge my mates a set mileage fee and charge them £1.22 if i need to.

    me neither.

But the OP never said how long the trip was.

If its (say) a 120 mile round trip it's only right that his friends stump up the cash.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Since posting this my petrol expenditure has reduced by over £10 a week!!! Given that I'm on IS and get £38 pw (I do get some maintenance via the CSA and CTC too, hence the low IS) it has made a HUGE difference to my credit card spenditure.
I'm also managing to get a lot more done at home and spend a lot more time doing things I want to do. Can you guess why?;)

I appreciate your input but perhaps I should have mentioned that the friend concerned doesn't want to learn to drive as the cost of running a car is too much - and this person for various reasons gets more money than I do.
I think the biggest kick in the teeth was when I collected and took them to the hospital for an appointment. At the end they went and collected the 'mileage' from the general office, and I was 'gratefull' when they paid the 70p parking fee......
I know, with friends like that - but in many other way I like this person, I just can't afford to be a free taxi - and if it were me I'd insist on paying, so why should they be any different?

Why not phone the hospital and find out how much your friend is able to claim back for the visit then charge that amount plus the car parking (assuming it does cover your costs) if you feel inclined you could legitimately add on a small amount for wear and tear. Hope this helps.
