No, mine didn't need to be kept in the dark. You grow them in a polystyrene box which came with the kit. With the lid on it is presumably dark, warm & damp enough. I kept mine in the kitchen which is very sunny!

Same here. My instructions say to keep them on a north facing windowsill most of the time.

I just peeped in the boxes..... nothing happening yet icon7.gif

Help needed please from anyone with mushroom growing experience.

The instructions on my Shii-take mushroom kit said (abbreviated)
"Make a few holes in the plastic bag the set arrived in and place in daylight, undisturbed, for a few weeks until 50% of the surface of the set turns brown.

Then immerse the set in a bucket of cold tap water for 48 hours..."

After the first crop the proceedure is repeated, from the immerse in bucket of cold water bit, to get subsequent crops.

I'm concerned because my set, which was very brown when it arrived, now appears to be growing blue mould. I have a feeling, from the amount of water in the bag the set arrived in, that it might already be at the plunge in bucket stage but am not sure and do not want to ruin the set

    Any ideas anyone?

Doesn't sound like its very easy this mushroom growing lark??

Have recently aquired an allotment and would like to grow button mushrooms as its the one veg I get through mounds of.

Would be interested to hear from anyone that has any success.

Do you need to buy a new kit every year then?

(never grown anything in my life before so wondering if ive took on a bit much with an allotment)

I'm taking a risk and going for the submerge.

KM, I think with kits you do have to replace them after a bit, I suppose with experience we might learn how to keep them going longer, but for now one mushroom would be great :o

Herbal, some kits are outdoor ones, I specifically wanted an indoor kit. What are you growing? Apparently you see odd grey growths begin to appear, or so I'm told.

Hello everybody!!! ~I have found a packet of mushroom seeds or should you call it spawn? (agaricus). Anyway, just like you, I wanted to grow my own mushrooms but the packets suggests to use well rotted /composted horse manure. Are there any suggestions where I could buy this apart from the local horse farm? Please help!!!:o
