Help with wheelchair

Hello, a friend of mine's dad has bought a self drive motorised wheelchair, whichis fine locally, however, they are not wealthy and they require a smaller one which will fold into the boot so when they go out he can still be mobile.
These are around nine hundred pounds, and even on monthly payments too much for them to afford.
Does anybody know if there is any help towards this from the Government? So far they have been unable to find out very much at all.
Thank you, oap

Sorry, I can't help, but have you tried asking on your local freecycle? Someone may be getting rid of one. It's a long shot, but worth a try!"There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." - Orison Swett Marden0

Has he thought of approaching various charities - locally such as The Lions, Rotary Club, RAOB etc may help towards costs.
If he has ever served in the forces, such as The British Legion, RAFA, RNA or Regimental Associations are often very helpful.
If he worked was he a member of a union?. They often have welfare branches that can help retired members.
Also is he claiming everything he is entitled to, benefit wise?. Such as the local CAB can check to make sure he is getting all he is entitled to.

Does the gentleman qualify for DLA? I know Motability do motorised thingies instead of cars.
Also ask his GP to ref him to the wheelchair clinic, they can advise which is best (its not one size fits all) maybe he would qualify that way?

would he consider buying secondhand?
If the wheelchair doesn't have to be new - these sites are excellent - with individuals offering used items for sale, vastly cheaper than buying new. (or sometimes generously offered free of charge)

Local papers often have people offering very well priced second hand transportable electric wheelchairs too
If you can find a local one- as you normally have to collect- then ebay's pretty good too!

does he need to use a wheelchair in the house? if he doesn't then he won't qualify for a powerchair from wheelchair services.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan
