DivX you just need the free player to watch things, paid for version is only if you want to create your own DivX stuff (bit like Adobe & .pdf files -> reader = free, writer/editing suite = paid for)
http://www.divx.com/en/downloads
as for the other codec's mostly they're free but you do need to make a point of downloading them first tme you want to play smething -maybe google 'codec packs' and look for somewhere you can download and install all the common free ones in one go -not needed to do so for a while so sry can't give a link of the top of my head0 -
Perhaps they are after a standalone player, it wont be that cheap if it plays mkv files0

I think the Volks400 is talking about a stand-alone DVD player.
The following product looks like it might be able to handle some of the formats that you mentioned: http://www.amazon.co.uk/DVICO-M-6500A-Multimedia-Drive-without/dp/B0013LGLNU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1253440430&sr=1-1-fkmr1
or

i think the OP needs to tell us what they are wanting and what are the connecting it to
divx,xvix,mkv,h264, brrip
what format is a BRrip? i know but the fact you are listing it as a format tells me that all your files will be on your hard drives
so are you planning to burn these? stream them or what?0 -
brrip is a rip of a Blue-ray disc to Xvid/DivX0

I use a old pc to play mine and only has 512mb I use vlcplayer it will play 1080p mkv files output via dvi-hdmi cable and to surround sound amp0

For a standalone unit I use Popcorn Hour (Google for 'popcorn hour'). Plays most format onto the TV.0

Google for WDTV - cheapest solution that plays all. Around £70. You will need an external storage device though, like a pen drive or usb hdd.0

sorry guys couldnt reply as was working on the weekend. yea im looking for a standalone player reason being im sick and tired of backing up avi on dvds and then watching on my lg divx player. sometimes the lg plays sometimes it doesnt, i think the divx codec on lg is quite old now. also these days BDrips are coming out which are enclosed in xvid container and quality is much better than dvdrips. so what im looking for is a divx player which plays everything(also mkv as now i have to convert them ) with a USB.0
