My computer won't shut down

I have Windows XP, 3 days ago we had a power cut and since then it won't shut down. I am having to turn off at the main switch, can anyone help please? PS I am a novice and don't understand technical terms so please make it easy to understand instructions. Thanks in advance.

  • How are you trying to shut down the PC?

Are you clicking the Start button and selecting "Turn off Computer"? If so what happens? Does it try to shut down but then restarts?

    1. See if this helps: Put your system disc in. Go to command prompt and type sfc /scannow then hit enter.

    Are you useing McAfee?

Sounds like you might have some corruption due to the power cut. Try running a scandisk and a defrag and see if that makes any difference:
