Buying a bed, what beds mattresses are made in the UK?

Hi all

We've started shopping for a new bed and are keen on pocket sprung/memory foam type. Done some more research online and seems Reylon/Sealy aren't what they used to be and are now making poorer quality products.

Reading the 'Which matresses?' thread it seems the best advice is to look at independents that hand make beds in the UK? None are mentioned there, has anyone found ones that are made in the UK?

So far I have found Millbrook.

I've also come across Hypnos, Sleepeezee, Vi-Spring but can't see if they are made in the UK or not?

Can anyone point me in the right direction, we have about £1000 budget for the bed (mattress/divan set).

Thanks!

  • Mattresses are one of the few things that we are still the best at making in the UK, and most of the bed industry in the Yorkshire area.

All those that you mentioned are part of big groups, so if you are looking for smaller independents, then a good start would be to google bed manufacturers in Yorkshire (or even West Yorkshire to narrow it down).

    Ratters,

We just purchased a Hypnos Pocket Spring Mattress that was on sale 60% off at House of Fraser. The sale is now over, but they still have some good deals on the site and you can purchase through Quidco and get percentage off as we did.

The Hypnos mattress advertises that they are hand-made, hypo-allergenic due to the fact that they are made with cotton, wool and 100% Belgian Tick covering. The more expensive models are made with cashmere, but you could pick up a very decent King Mattress set for between £700 - £1000 if you find a good sale.

    Also try Mattressman.com for sales.....

Nice advert, but did you see the title for the video "Hypnos Mattress Promotional Video (Worlds Most Expensive Mattress) - $50,000":eek::eek:

Being serious though, most high quality mattresses made by smaller independent companies are still made in a similar way. It's the big brands who tend to use automated production. Hypnos are probably the best of the big names, but very expensive.

If you go to www.snugglebeds.co.uk you will see that they are an import company. So it appears that all of their beds and mattresses are imported then a snuggle sticker added.

Mattresses are one of the few things that in the UK we still make better quality than the rest of the world.

If you don't want to be too hot, then go for a mattress that has full size steel springs with memory foam. Otherwise the heat can't escape through the reflex foam.
  • We've just bought a Harrison emerald 5 foot bed in the sale, £1061 delivered, old bed taken away. Also bought DS1 a new bed, double this time!! from same shop for £400, just fine for him untill he leaves home [normally £897] We got 45% off the sale price og the Harrison, as it was the end of the sale & they were getting new stock in. independent bed shop in our local city.
ps the harrison bed has a 10 yr guantee, & is made in the UK; Yorkshire I think,

Well done for buying from an independent shop, and for getting the bed for a couple of hundred off the RRP. I'd just like to ask a couple of questions if you don't mind:
    • did they tell you the more springs the better?
    • what were you expecting to pay when you went into the shop?
    • is it a 10 year unconditional guarantee, or is it a warranty on a sliding scale?

Think Warren Evans mattresses are all handmade. There are usually discount codes floating around too.

As long as you stay away from the big brands who have automated production lines, then most mattresses are still hand made.
